Grain quality characteristics of imported rice in Ghana: Implications for breeding for consumer-preferred varieties.

Rice is the fastest growing food source in Ghana. The country, however, imports about 70 per cent of its rice requirement due to low volumes of production and poor grain quality of domestic rice compared to imported ones. In the study, 10 popular imported rice brands on the Ghanaian market were characterised for grain quality traits including grain dimensions, apparent amylose content, gelatinisation temperature, paste viscosity properties, and aroma using physiochemical properties and DNA markers. The rice brands came from Asia and the USA.

Genetic diversity of rice (Oryza sativa) germplasm from six countries using simple sequence repeats markers.

This experiment was carried out to determine the genotypic variation among rice (Oryza sativa) accessions using simple sequence repeats (SSR) markers. In the present study, a total of 12 SSR markers were used across 87 rice accessions from six countries. NTSYS-pc and PowerMarker software were used for data analysis. Six primers out of these 12 primers showed DNA amplification and polymorphism among the 87 rice accessions.

Genetic analysis of tolerance to rice tungro bacilliform virus in rice (Oryza sativa L.) through agroinoculation.

Balimau Putih [an Indonesian cultivar tolerant to rice tungro bacilliform virus (RTBV)] was crossed with IR64 (RTBV, susceptible variety) to produce the three filial generations F1, F2 and F3. Agroinoculation was used to introduce RTBV into the test plants. RTBV tolerance was based on the RTBV level in plants by analysis of coat protein using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The level of RTBV in cv. Balimau Putih was significantly lower than that of IR64 and the susceptible control, Taichung Native 1.

Farmer and consumer preferences for rice in the Ashanti region of Ghana: Implications for rice breeding in West Africa.

Rice has become an important staple in Ghana in recent years but most consumption is met by imports. In this study, farmers’ preferences for rice varietal traits especially grain quality and the relationship of grain quality with consumer acceptability of locally produced rice was investigated in the Ashanti region of Ghana. Both formal and informal survey approaches were employed to collect data. The farmers preferred rice varieties with high yield potential and excellent grain quality. Jasmine 85 was the most popular variety because of its good taste and pleasant aroma.

Estimating Bird Damage to Rice in Africa: Evidence from the Senegal River Valley

Granivorous birds, mainly the Red-billed Quelea, have subsisted on cereal crops in Africa for centuries and have caused substantial damage. There is, however, limited recent evidence on their impact. We propose an indirect method to estimate bird-inflicted crop losses by fitting a production function with a damage abatement component and pest intensity slope dummies on a panel database of rice farmers in the Senegal River Valley. This allows us to estimate both bird damage and marginal productivity of bird control at different levels of bird pressure.

Enhancing Rice Productivity in West Africa Through Genetic Enhancement

Rice yields have stagnated in West Africa at 1 to 2 Mg ha?1 because of unfavorable rice environments and poor management practices. Interspecific rice cultivars, the New Rice for Africa (NERICA), were developed by crossing Asian rice (Oryza sativa L.) and African rice (O. glaberrima Steud.) to improve upland and lowland rice productivity in resource-poor farmers’ fields.

Empowering smallholder rice farmers in Tanzania to increase productivity for promoting food security in Eastern and Southern Africa

Despite low rice yield levels in Tanzania, the country is the leading producer in Eastern and Southern Africa. Given that this business is dominated by smallholder farmers and that the country is endowed with extensive landscapes suitable for rice production coupled with a high domestic and foreign potential market, there is an urgent need to enhance the yield as a key to promote food security from household to national and international levels.

Cold tolerant rice evaluation in Ethiopian highlands.

Ethiopia's geography is marked by mammoth depressions and mountains ranges due to the rift valley system that cuts across the country. Consequently vast arable lands are located at high altitudes more than 2000 meter above sea level. Rice was introduced to the country few decades ago nevertheless the production area is rapidly expanding. Rice can be grown in wide agroclimatic zones; however, low temperature stress is a series problem for rice growers at high elevations in the tropics.

Characterization of a putative rice mutant for reaction to rice tungro disease.

Artificial mutations may induce traits that are scarce among natural germplasm sources. This study was conducted to characterize a rice line derived from variety IR64 showing resistance to rice tungro disease (RTD). Approximately 24,000 lines derived from IR64 seeds treated with mutagens were evaluated for reaction to RTD. One of the lines, M4D6 83-1 (MD83), showed enhanced resistance to RTD. MD83 was resistant to rice tungro spherical virus (RTSV) and the virus vector, green leafhopper (GLH; Nephotettix virescens Distant).

Breeding Rice for Improved Grain Quality

Rice grain quality improvement has become very crucial for most breeding programs around the world. Grain quality is a complex trait which comprises milling, appearance (grain size and chalkiness), cooking and eating (starch properties including apparent amylose content (AAC), gelatinization temperature (GT), gel consistency and paste viscosity measured using rapid visco analyzer measured using rapid visco analyzer (RVA) as well as nutritional quality. Many genes/quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for the various quality traits have been identified/cloned.
