Steering Life's Rocky Road: Gender Action Learning for Individuals and Communities.

The underlying framework for the activities in this manual is the ‰ÛÏempowerment road journey,‰Û which looks at life goals and personal development, as well as livelihoods. The framework highlights the relationships between these elements at an individual level. It suggests that the only way forward for women's poverty reduction is to address the gender inequalities that constrain not only women, but also men and children. GALS encourages people to move towards the goals that they themselves identify in order to help remove these constraints. Mayoux argues that GALS is best taught through participatory practices with communities and organizations that are already implementing the methodology. This manual is subsequently designed to facilitate community-based trainings for coordinating GALS' processes. This manual contains a diverse set of ideas and suggestions that build on ‰ÛÏTree of Diamond Dreams.‰Û Field staff should combine elements from this material to design their own manuals that they can use for a greater sense of ownership and creativity.
